Colt McCoy appears to have taken a slight lead in the Heisman derby heading into the critical final week of action before the ballots are counted.
Tim Tebow – Florida Gators
The 2007 Heisman winner played his final home game in Gainesville last week. Tebow accounted for five touchdowns (3 pass, 2 rush) in a 37-10 over Florida State. He completed 17-of-21 passes for 221 yards in the victory. Tebow has now accounted for 140 touchdowns (84 pass, 56 rush) in his collegiate career. He has also accumulated over 11,000 total yards in his time with the Gators as a passer and runner. In 2009, Tebow has fired 17 touchdown passes with just four interceptions. On Saturday, Tebow and his top-ranked Gators will square off against the 2nd-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in a showdown for the SEC Championship in Atlanta. A Florida win combined with a big performance by Tebow could enable the Gators signal-caller to snare his second Heisman Trophy. See the Latest Odds to win the 2009 Heisman Trophy
Colt McCoy – Texas Longhorns
McCoy was a dual threat in last week’s wild 49-39 win at Texas A & M. For the second week in a row, he fired four TD passes but his surprise performance on the ground has potentially given him a leg up in the Heisman race. McCoy rushed for a whopping 175 yards against the Aggies on 18 carries. His 65-yard TD run helped the Longhorns survive a scare to remain unbeaten. On the season, McCoy has thrown 27 TD passes with nine interceptions. Now, he could be just one win away from securing college football’s biggest individual honor. McCoy’s 3rd-ranked Texas club will face Nebraska in Dallas on Saturday for the Big 12 title. See the Latest Odds to win the 2009 Heisman Trophy
Mark Ingram – Alabama Crimson Tide
Ingram will need a monster game against Florida to have any shot at winning the Heisman. He was held to just 30 yards on 16 rushing attempts in Alabama’s narrow 26-21 victory at Auburn last week. Ingram also suffered a hip pointer injury in the game and is unlikely to be at full strength against the Gators. He is sixth in the country in rushing with 1,429 yards. Ingram is averaging 6.5 yards per carry with 12 TD runs. See the Latest Odds to win the 2009 Heisman Trophy
Toby Gerhart – Stanford Cardinal
The senior running back has completed an outstanding regular season for Stanford. He leads the nation in rushing with 1,736 yards and in touchdown runs with 26. Before a national television audience, Gerhart rushed for 205 yards in his final home game to help Stanford to a 45-38 win over Notre Dame. He rushed for three touchdowns, including the game-winner in the final minute, to lead the Cardinal to a dramatic win. Gerhart even added a touchdown pass to add a little spice to his Heisman campaign. On the season, he has ten 100-yard rushing efforts, with three 200-yard performances. In each of his final four regular season games, Gerhart rushed for at least three touchdowns. He could have a Heisman Trophy in his travel bag for Stanford’s bowl game in a few weeks.
