Boise State vs. Virginia Tech Point Spread Preview, Expert Picks, Score Prediction

Of all of the games in the first week of the college football betting campaign, none are going to be more highly anticipated or hotly contested as the duel between the Boise State Broncos and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Boise has only lost four games under HC Chris Petersen, but this is going to be one of the toughest tests the program has had since the Fiesta Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners which was won on the infamous Statue of Liberty play.

VaTech-Boise State Week 1 Point Spread: VaTech -1 point
(Boise State opened at 3pt favs)

VaTech-Boise State Week 1 Over-Under: 50.5 points (opened at 49.5)

Here are the three keys to the game that will determine the winner on Labor Day night:

Boise State vs. VaTech Betting Key #1: Can Boise overcome all of the intangibles in this game?

– A year before Boise State really got on the map with the win in the Fiesta Bowl, they went “Between the Hedges” and squared off with the Georgia Bulldogs. The Dawgs put a whooping on Boise that day, a loss that forever stung. Though there are big wins against teams like Oregon on the road and Oklahoma in that neutral site, Boise State really hasn’t overcome the long road trip east and defeated one of the big boys in the big conferences as a visitor. Though this is a “neutral site game,” FedEx Field will almost certainly be at least 90 percent in maroon and orange. Parlay that with the obvious high ranking and national attention for Boise, and the end result might be a bit much to overcome for Boise State. (see expert Boise St. vs. VaTech Picks)

Boise State vs. VaTech Betting Key #2: Can Tyrod Taylor take care of the football?

– If he doesn’t, V-Tech is as good as dead. Boise had one of the top offenses and defenses in the nation last season and returns all but one starter on the entire team from that squad. Taylor, a dual threat as both a runner and passer, can make things happen like no one Boise State will ever see in the WAC. Unfortunately, he’s also very turnover prone. If he takes care of the pigskin, all of the returning starters might be able to get the Hokies into the high 20s, a number which it figures to have to reach to win this game.

Boise State vs. VaTech Betting Key #3: Is Kellen Moore nothing more than a product of the soft schedule?

– Moore might have played well against TCU in the Fiesta Bowl, but he hasn’t taken on any of the real major programs in his career as of yet. Virginia Tech has a swarming defense that will inevitably rank in the Top 25 nationally once again this year. No quarterback in the nation had a better TD/INT ratio than #11 did last year, but that could be tested. Just like V-Tech’s signal caller, Moore must absolutely protect the pigskin in his biggest game.

Boise State is favored in this game, which shows incredible disrespect to one of the best programs in the land in VTECH. The Hokies are going to prove right away that they command respect of the voters and oddsmakers by winning a huge de facto home game to spoil the National Championship aspirations of Boise State right at the outset of the season.

Boise State vs. Virginia Tech Score Prediction: Virginia Tech 27 – Boise State 21

Bet on Mel Gibson's Next DUI

While Nevada sports books are limited to setting odds related to contested sporting events, online sports books are able to go a little further. Online bookmakers have been able to set lines for such events as political elections and entertainment awards shows. Along these lines, bettors have the option to weigh in on which celebrity will be arrested for a DUI next??

The 24 celebrities in the prop are mainly actors and singers although there are a couple of notable athletes listed as well.

Here’s a look at a couple of the favorites for this unique entertainment prop:

1. Charlie Sheen (+500 odds to have next DUI)

Sheen is viewed as an example of what can happen to an actor that gets caught up in the Hollywood lifestyle. He became a prominent movie actor in his twenties with films such as Platoon and Wall Street in the late eighties. By the late nineties, Sheen’s star was on the decline. He had some drug problems and was a prominent figure in the Heidi Fleiss scandal. In the last decade, Sheen was able to bounce back with a hit television sitcom. He appeared to have his life on track as the star of Two and a Half Men. However, Sheen was arrested for a domestic violence incident involving his wife in December of last year. Right now, Sheen is shooting episodes for his show. With a salary of over $1 million per episode, Sheen could stand to lose quite a bit with a DUI.

2. Ben Roethlisberger (+500 odds to have next DUI)

While Roethlisberger has captured two Super Bowl titles as the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, he has been gaining most of his headlines off the field recently. Roethlisberger’s judgment first came into question after a serious motorcycle accident in 2006. He was viewed as being reckless for not wearing a helmet while riding his motorcycle. In the summer of 2009, a civil lawsuit was filed against Roethlisberger for sexual assault related to an alleged incident at a Nevada hotel. Earlier this year, he was investigated by the police in Georgia for another sexual assault incident at a college bar. With a pattern of questionable behavior now in place, Roethlisberger was suspended for at least the first four games of the 2010 NFL regular season. Recent reports have indicated that he is taking steps to clean up his act to get back on the field for the Steelers as soon as possible.

Actor Kiefer Sutherland is the next choice in the prop at odds of +600. His career has had some of the same ups and downs as Sheen’s. During the middle of his eight-year run on the hit show 24, Sutherland had a couple of DUI arrests.

Actor Mel Gibson (+800) has been in the headlines lately over some controversial taped telephone conversations with his former girlfriend. He had a notable DUI incident back in 2006. Besides Roethlisberger, golfer John Daly (+1000) is the other athlete in the prop.

Five Reasons why Houston will Crash the BCS Bowl party in 2011

After reaching the Conference USA title game last season, the Houston Cougars enter the 2010-2011 college football betting campaign as the conference favorite. With an explosive offensive attack, Houston could become an emerging sleeper in the college rankings as the year progresses.

Here’s a look at five reasons why Houston could become a BCS buster:

1. Case Keenum

As Case Keenum enters his senior campaign, Keenum is a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender. In 2009, he led the nation in touchdown passes (44) while throwing for an NCAA-best 5,671 yards. Keenum passed for more than 500 yards on four different occasions last season. He also threw for more than 5,000 yards with 44 TD strikes as a sophomore in 2008. Keenum has completed 69% of his career pass attempts for the Cougars. With Keenum directing the Houston offense, the club led the country in total, scoring and passing offense last season.

2. Kevin Sumlin

The third-year head coach of the Cougars is one of the rising stars on the college sidelines. He has posted an 18-9 record in his two seasons at Houston. Sumlin landed with the Cougars after serving as the offensive coordinator of the Oklahoma Sooners in 2006-07. While he may eventually wind up at a major BCS program, Sumlin’s coaching could take Houston a long way in 2010.

3. James Cleveland

Cleveland played a major role in the success of Houston’s offense last season as the club’s top wide receiver. The Iowa Hawkeyes transfer ranked in the top 8 in the country in catches and receiving yards per game last season. He hauled in 14 of Keenum’s touchdown strikes in 2009. Cleveland grabbed 19 receptions for 241 yards in last year’s C-USA title game. The Keenum-Cleveland tandem should be able to develop even more chemistry in 2010.

Odds to win the 2010-2011 BCS Championship

4. A new defense

If the Cougars are going to become a BCS sleeper in 2010-2011, the defense will need to step up. In 2009, Houston ranked in the bottom 10 in the country in total and rushing defense. Sumlin is hoping that a new scheme will boost the unit this season. New coordinator Brian Stewart has installed a 3-4 set for the defense. The defense does have some nice speed to work with. Junior linebacker Marcus McGraw lead the conference in tackles last season.

5. A favorable schedule

The Cougars certainly have a live shot at running the table this season. None of Houston’s 12 opponents are ranked in the top 25 entering the season. The Cougars will have to face three BCS conference squads in 2010. Houston will take on UCLA, Mississippi State and Texas Tech in non-conference action. The Bruins defense could provide some trouble for Keenum at the Rose Bowl on September 18th. The regular season finale at Texas Tech on November 27th could be the most difficult matchup for Houston. The Red Raiders will be looking for some revenge after a 29-28 defeat at Houston last season. In conference play, the Cougars toughest game will likely be at Southern Mississippi late in the season.

Madden 11 Curse Betting Odds Released On Drew Brees

One of the more intriguing prop bets from for the 2010 NFL regular season, is a wager related to the so-called “Madden Curse” associated with the player that is selected to be on the cover of the popular video game. After leading his team to a Super Bowl title, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is on the cover for the Madden 2011 game.

The prop bet involves whether or not Brees will start all 16 regular season games in 2010:

“No” is a -133 favorite
“Yes” is priced at -105

Is there something to the curse? Here’s a look at some factors to consider before placing a wager on this prop:

Will the “Madden Curse” strike again?

The first factor to consider involves the durability of Brees. While he had a significant shoulder injury at the end of the 2005 season that contributed to his departure from the San Diego Chargers, Brees has never missed a start due to injury in his nine-year NFL career. After making no starts as a rookie in 2001, he started every game for the Chargers in 2002.

Due to performance issues, Brees was benched for five games in 2003. He rebounded to win the full-time starting job in 2004 but was held out of the regular season finale because San Diego’s playoff seeding was secured. Brees had a streak of 79 straight starts in the regular season that was snapped in week 17 of last season. With homefield advantage locked up, Brees was held out of last year’s regular season finale at Carolina.

History of the “Madden Curse”

Since running back Garrison Hearst was the first player to grace the cover of a Madden game in 1999, some odd things have occurred to the players that have been showcased on the front of the games. After gaining 1,570 yards in 1998, Hearst missed the next two seasons for the San Francisco 49ers due to injury.

For 2002, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper was on the cover after throwing 33 TD passes in 2000 to help his club to an 11-5 record. In the next two years, Culpepper struggled to a 10-17 mark as a starting signal-caller.

Shortly after being put on the cover of Madden 2004, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick broke his leg in the 2003 preseason.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was struck by injuries after gracing the 2006 Madden cover. In the 2005-06 seasons, McNabb missed 13 contests due to injury.

Running backs Eddie George, Marshall Faulk and Shaun Alexander all suffered injuries and major declines in production after being Madden cover players. However, all three of the runners were at an age where backs generally begin to suffer some reduced numbers.

Brett Favre being on the cover of Madden 09 in a Green Bay Packers uniform proved to be an odd sight after he came out of retirement to play with the New York Jets in 2008.

The Madden 2010 game had two players on the cover for the first time. There were no signs of a curse for Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald in 2009 but Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu did miss a good portion of the year due to injuries.

UConn-Michigan Point Spread Preview, Odds, Score Prediction

One of the best programs in the Big East and one of the proudest programs in the history of college football collide in a college football betting clash next Saturday when the Michigan Wolverines play host to the Connecticut Huskies. Can HC Randy Edsall go on the road and take care of Big Blue, or will HC Rich Rodriguez score a major victory in what could be a do-or-die year for him? Check out these three keys to the game.

UConn-Michigan Week 1 Point Spread: Michigan -3 points (opened at -2.5)

UConn-Michigan Week 1 Over-Under: 53.5 points (opened at 54)

Recent Betting Trends: Over is 7-1 in CONN last 8 games overall, CONN are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 games overall

UConn vs. Michigan Betting Key #1: Will a Michigan quarterback shine on the big time stage?

– Regardless of whether this is a traditional matchup or not, Michigan needs to realize that this is the biggest game of the Rich Rod era. Whether the former West Virginia Mountaineers coach elects to go with Tate Forcier or Denard Robinson as the teams starting quarterback, both will probably see reps in the game. Forcier, who threw for 2,050 yards and 13 TDs last year as a freshman showed some real promise. However, Robinson is a bigger rushing threat, something Rodriguez loved to use at WVU. Regardless, both are turnover prone, and that simply can’t be the case in this game for Michigan to come out victorious.

UConn vs. Michigan Betting Key #2: Will Jordan Todman emerge as an early Heisman candidate?

– Todman ran for an average of 5.1 yards per carry last season, but the fact that he split carries with Andre Dixon kept his yardage and touchdown numbers in check. Still, Todman was good for 1,188 yards last year and might be able to break the 1,500 yard plateau now that Dixon is gone. Michigan’s rush defense had some rough patches last season, and the end result might be a fantastic game for Todman. If he can go for 100+ yards and a couple scores, the Huskies are going to be tough to topple in this spot.

UConn vs. Michigan Betting Key #3: Does losing Lindsey Witten hurt the Connecticut defense too much to stop the potentially explosive Wolverines ‘O’?

– Witten was the Big East leader in sacks a season ago, and he is clearly going to be virtually impossible to replace. However, Edsall, typically defensive minded coach, does have eight returning starters to work with in 2010-11. A big time playmaker is going to have to step up, especially in the rushing department, where UConn allowed 132.8 yards per game last year, 45th in the NCAA. Still, not having the presence of Witten is going to be a huge loss for a defense that has been improving with each passing season.

Michigan might be ready to take a big step in the right direction in the Big Ten, but taking down a Big East power, even at home, will prove to be too difficult. The Ann Arbor faithful have seen some horrendous losses in recent seasons, and this could be yet another one that falls the wrong direction. Look for Connecticut to leave the Big House with a big, big win for both the program and the Big East.

UConn vs. Michigan Week 1 Score Prediction: Connecticut 33 – Michigan 24
