NFL Week 1 Odds & A Few Predictions For 2011 Season Kick-off

Yes, it s only the first week of May, but Week 1 NFL Lines for the 2011 NFL season are already out, and you can find some good value by betting this early, as the lines will only get more airtight as game day approaches.

To that end, here are five plays we like right now for Week 1, which is now four months away and ticking.

New Orleans Saints (+5) over Green Bay Packers: This could very well be a preview of the NFC Championship Game, except the weather should be better in Week 1. Now the Packers will no doubt be sky high after the lifting of the Super Bowl Champion banner, but keep in mind that it was the Saints that led the NFC in total defense last season at 306.2 yards per game, and this looks like a lot of points to give a Drew Brees’ led offense. In fact, Brees is 30-19, 61.2 percent against the spread as an underdog.

Pittsburgh Steelers (+3) over Baltimore Ravens: Speaking of quarterbacks you should never give points too, Ben Roethlisberger is 14-7 against the spread as an underdog including 11-5, 68.8 percent ATS on the road. More importantly, Big Ben is undefeated all time vs. Baltimore’s Joe Flacco, going 6-0 straight up in all the head-to-head encounters. Now the Ravens beat the Steelers twice in the last three years with Roethlisberger out for Pittsburgh, but both of those wins were by exactly three points, which would only ‘push’ this spread.

Indianapolis Colts (-1) over Houston Texas: Do you remember when the Texans opened the season last year by running right through the Colts in a 34-24 win while rushing for 257 yards? The Colts certainly do, and they will ensure that it does not happen again. Peyton Manning should have a healthy receiving corps for this game, which is something he never had after the first few weeks of last season, and Indianapolis upgraded both the offensive and defensive lines in the draft. If the receivers can stay healthy throughout the 2011-12 season, the Colts would become serious Super Bowl contenders, as Manning did possibly his best job ever last year with nobody to throw to.

St. Louis Rams (+4.5) over Philadelphia Eagles: Now we think the Eagles will win the NFC East in 2011, but this is not the spot to be giving points on the road, as the young Rams played very well at home last year while winning five games and allowing 17 points or less in six of their eight home games. The offense should only get better this year with quarterback Sam Bradford, who had a very good rookie year; expect him to benefit immeasurably from that experience. Remember also that the Eagles allowed 123 rushing yards to James Sparks of the Packers in the playoffs, so Steven Jackson should have a big game.

New England Patriots (-4) over Miami Dolphins: These teams met on a Monday night last year, with the Patriots winning 41-14 here in Miami. That marked the third time in the last four meetings in the Sunshine State that New England scored over 40 points, and the Pats should open up in an ornery mood after their playoff disappointment of a year ago vs. the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets!

Trackbacks

  1. [...] Oakland Raiders (+450): This is the best value in the division, as we don’t feel that Oakland should be a longer price than Kansas City. The Raiders went from a rag-tag team two years ago to a respectable 8-8 last season, when they went a perfect 6-0 inside the West! Granted, all that did was get coach Tom Cable fired, but that had more to do with off-the-field issues and his departure could be seen as a positive. One negative is the probable loss of free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, but Richard Seymour has become a team leader, even leading workouts for several Oakland players near his home during the lockout. 2. [...] Houston Texans (+250): The Texans scored enough points to win games last year, but they had one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Houston finished 29th in the NFL in scoring defense, 30th in total defense and 32nd or dead last in passing defense. As result, they have brought in Wade Phillips as the new defensive coordinator, and as bad as he is as an NFL head coach, Wade knows defense and he should thrive in his new position. The Texans also drafted defensive players with their first four picks. Houston could make the playoffs, but they won’t dethrone the Colts just yet. 3. [...] Detroit Lions (+450): The Lions made a lot of progress last season to finish at 6-10, even winning two games on the road. The offensive line is still a concern though, and it is no wonder that Matt Stafford has been injured in each of his first two NFL seasons considering all the hits he has taken. So in typical Lions fashion, they did not take an offensive lineman until the seventh round of the draft. That said, Detroit is actually pretty solid in other areas this year, so an improved offensive line is all that stands between them and a legitimate playoff run. 4. [...] San Francisco 49ers (+100): Now Mike Singletary may have been a flop as a head coach, but is the coaching change to Jim Harbaugh enough to make this team even money? We find that highly doubtful. Sure, the Niners have some nice pieces in place on defense and they have a solid running game, but is Alex Smith a good enough quarterback to take them to the promised land? Now we have no doubt that San Francisco will be better than the 6-10 it was last season, but the big quarterback edge the Rams possess over the 49ers will make a world of difference. 5. [...] Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+400): The Bucs were a surprising 10-6 last year, though many people are writing that off as a fluke as they did not beat a team that finished the year over .500 until the last game of the year, and that was vs. a disinterested Saints team. That said, the Tampa Bay defense is legitimate, quarterback Josh Freeman developed nicely as the season went on and running back LeGarrette Blount is now the starter from the get-go after a great second half last season. This is a team on the rise that can make for a solid wild card push. Also see: Super Bowl Odds | Odds to win NFC Conference | Week 1 Lines [...]
