BetUS Sportsbook has a host of props up in 2010 World Cup betting action. Today, we’re going to analyze some of those props and prognosticate how well the United States will do in South Africa in 2010.
Landon Donovan odds to win Golden Boot (+8000) – Pardon us for chuckling a bit too loudly with this prop. We’re going to give Donovan all the credit in the world, as he is one of the top offensive threats on a team that has the potential to be very dangerous in South Africa, but let’s be realistic for a moment. Donovan only scored five goals in 18 qualifying matches this year, which didn’t even make him the favorite on the team. F Jozy Altidore led the squad with six goals. It’s going to take a heck of a lot more than two or three goals to win the Golden Boot in this tournament, and it doesn’t seem like Donovan really has any chance of beating the World Cup odds in this one.
USA Odds to Win Group C (+450) – At least we have a remotely intriguing price here to choose from. All things considered, the United States really has no excuse not to snare at least four points from matches against Slovenia and Algeria, and manager Bob Bradley will tell you that nothing less than six points is acceptable. At that point, it could really just be a matter of scoring more goals against the two lesser foes in this group than England does. The first match of the tournament against the Three Lions is going to be the difference maker. Yes, the USA is a farfetched +525 to win that match, but many in the national media think that it is a realistic possibility. Even a draw (+350 at BetUS Sportsbook) would put the pressure on England to beat Algeria and Slovenia by as many goals as possible if it cares about winning Group C versus finishing as the qualifying runner up.
USA Odds to Win the World Cup (+6000) – The United States has never done better than finish in the semifinals of the World Cup, with that coming way back in 1930. There is reason for hope after reaching the 2009 Confederations Cup Final, even though that isn’t a tournament that most countries are eagerly awaiting to play in. The Stars and Stripes proved that they are worthy of competing with the best in the world, as demonstrated by that win over Spain in South Africa last year. The draw for the US works out well, as an upset over England really should avoid any major catastrophes possibly even as far as the semifinals of this tournament. The possibility is there to face either Mexico (a team that the United States has already proven that it can beat) or South Africa (a team that would probably only reach that stage in the competition due to its home field advantage). If that was the case, getting 60/1 on a USA team that is dangerous against anyone in the field would be a steal. It probably won’t happen, but the odds would be right to take a flier on the USA.
